Five Quick Tips for Clothes Shopping

Tip One

Take a friend who will be honest with you shopping, NEVER rely on shop assistants – they are paid to tell you that you look good even when you don’t.

Tip Two

When trying on ask yourself or a trustworthy friend if it flatters you.  It should suit your shape, the colour should be great and the size should fit (or be taken to a tailor to fit properly).

Tip Three

Do you have somewhere to wear it?  For example will you wear it to work, a party or casual or will it hang in your wardrobe only to get admired.  No point in having a great piece of clothing that you will never wear anywhere (I know I have a great jacket that has nowhere appropriate to wear it).

Tip Four

Is the item worth the cost?  Think about cost per wear.  If you live in jeans then I think it is okay to buy a great pair even if they are expensive as the cost per wear is minimal.  Then there is the expensive dress that gets worn once, which is really not that economical, so think about where else you can wear the dress.

There is also the reverse of this – the sale item that seems like a bargain but never gets worn.  Don’t be seduced by the sale item, take a step back and think would you buy this at full price if you could afford it? If the answer yes, buy it; if the answer is no, leave it.

Tip Five

Does it go with something in your wardrobe? There is nothing worse than getting home and realising the items goes with absolutely nothing you have, unless you want to go and buy a whole lot of other items.

My Ten Must Have Items

1                    Trench Coat. I would suggest either black or tan, and remember to dress for your shape. So if you are short get one that ends at the hips and if you are taller a mid thigh length one will be perfect.  This one is from http://www.maxshop.com/

2                    Classic White Blouse.  Buy the best quality you can afford.  I prefer one with a bit of stretch in it and white buttons.  This one is from banana republic.

3                    Black or neutral trousers.  A well cut pair of trousers always look good.  If you are bottom heavy go for a pair of boot legs, if you need curves a slim fitting (but not skin tight) pair will be great.  I love banana republic trousers, they have styles for all shapes and they come in tall and petit.

4                    Jeans.  These are one of the hardest items to purchase and you will have to try on a lot of pairs to find the ones that are best for you. I personally love a dark wash. My favourite brand at the moment is Hudson.

5                    Little black dress.  This is always great to have from a dinner to a cocktail night, get one that you feel great in and dress it up with shoes and accessories.  Leona Edmiston has great dresses for all occasions.  http://www.leonaedmiston.com/

6                    Black or neutral knee length skirt. This length is universally flattering, to make it sexy wear a fitted skirt, to hide wide hips go for an A-line skirt, and to make curves try a bias cut skirt.  Country road has a great variety of skirts from casual to workwear. http://www.countryroad.com.au/

7                    A great knit. Either a cardigan or a jumper; for a bit of luxury try cashmere. It is also a great way to add a bit of colour to your outfit. I picked up a cashmere cardigan from Gap in the sales for a bargin.  http://www.gap.com/

8                    A great going out outfit/piece.  Have a go to outfit or piece that fits most occasions from a backyard bbq to dinner at a swanky restaurant.  My current piece is a blue blouse that looks great with a pair of jeans and flats for a BBQ but can be dressed up with silky pants and heals for night.

9                    Statement shoes. Whether they are a pair of animal print flats or pair of fabulous shoes pick a pair that makes your heart sing. Just a few of mine!

10               Accessories.  The quickest way to change or make an outfit is with accessories.  They don’t have to be expensive; there are lots of shops that have trendy accessories to update your wardrobe.  It is the cheapest and easiest way to make your wardrobe up to date.  My present fav is mimco http://www.mimco.com.au/

New Accessories from Mimco

As I have been procrastinating about finishing off the Waikiki Shopping information, I thought I would show you what I have been buying.

I visited Mimco, who have a great sale on at the moment and picked up these.

This hardcase evening bag in Dove Grey.

This bracelet, but the jury is still out on whether I like the safety pins in it.  Might take them out. I am sure the "sample" one I  tried on in the store didn't have safety pins in it. And lastly:
This necklace.

Shoes - my fifth love (after Hubby and children)

Shoes, Shoes and more shoes

To say I love shoes is probably and understatement.  At them moment I have four pairs on my wish list.

The first are the lovely red soled Christian Louboutins www.christianlouboutin.com  that I am wanting for my impending milestone birthday.  My husband doesn’t like my current favourites, what do you think?

Then there are the two pairs I eyed up on my last trip to Auckland.  The first from Mi Piaci http://www.mipiaci.com/, these also come in red with black trim.

T

The next pair is from a great shop called Briarwood www.briarwood.co.nz which I can’t find a picture for so will do my best to describe them.  They are a grey ballet flat but in a giraffe print.  So cute!

The final pair, which I am not sure whether I will buy or not, is a pair of patent leather flat laceups. I haven’t researched into these.  So I will have to go and find what I love and post them later.

Off now to finish the next blog on shopping in Waikiki Hawaii.

LA Shopping

I have been asked a number of times about where to shop in LA so here it is.

LA Shopping / California Shopping

The Grove – 189 The Grove Drive, Los Angeles

Outdoor, has a historic farmers market and nice boutique store and chain stores.

Example of Shops

Fashion

Has a great Gap www.gap.com
Victoria Secret http://www.victoriassecret.com/ I would recommend getting a fitting at VS, they measure you then give you all the styles available in your size to try.  You pick your favourites and they take you around the store and show you what colours, patterns etc are available.  Lots of fun.

Homewares

The Grove has some American restaurants – The Cheesecake Factory, Maggiano’s

If you need to buy something special for a young girl you can get a “Just Like Me Doll”
from American Girl http://www.americangirl.com/ .

Strip Shopping

Melrose Ave
– know for Kitson and other boutiques.

This website has a list of shops and restaurants that are well know on
Melrose Ave.

The Beverly Centre
8500 Beverly Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90048

This mall has great Chain Stores, High End Designers and Departments Store. I have not been personally to this mall so can’t tell you whether it is better than South Coast Plaza but will be much closer for you.

Examples of Shops (see below for websites)

·         Ann Taylor
·         Banana Republic
·         Burberry
·         BeBe
·         Victorias Secret
·         Prada
·         Bloomingdales
·         Macy’s

South Coast Plaza (nearer to Anaheim)

This is a mall like Chadstone - chain stores, department stores and high end stores. There is a bridge near Tiffany that takes you across to extra shops; this is where you will find Ann Taylor Loft.

Department stores

Womens Clothings

Homewares

·         Williams Sonoma http://www.williams-sonoma.com/
·         Crate and Barrel
·         Villeroy and Boch
·         Macys Home
·         Pottery Barn

Outlet Shopping - California

If you are going to San Diego I would recommend Carlsbad Premium Outlets (30 mins north of San Diego).
5620 Paseo del Norte,
Suite 100

Carlsbad, CA 92008

Example of Shops

If you sign up online as a VIP member you can get extra discounts.

I personally like Ontario Mills Outlet better – it was a 40min drive from Anaheim but a lot longer back as traffic was bad.
One Mills Circle
Ontario, CA 91764

Example of Shops
  • Levi’s
  • Banana Republic
  • Gap (better store than Carlsbad)
  • Ralph Lauren
  • Saks Off Fifth Ave – great for designer discounts
  • Tommy Hilfiger
  • Off Broadway Shoes (designer shoes)
  • Nine West
  • Sketchers
  • Footlocker
